“I give myself very, very good advice. But I very seldom follow it. Be patient is very, very good advice but the waiting makes me curious.” *Alice in Wonderland.* One of my favorite childhood movies that still speaks into my life today! I still have unbirthday tea parties every year, except now I get to have them at “Captial Grill.” They give me a free dessert! Don’t judge me!
Growing up, the lesson I took from that movie was to pay attention to the obvious teacher, to never wander off and to always watch where you’re going, that’s the best way to prevent a fall. In my adult years, I understand that it means a bit of the opposite. The movie tells us to dream! To dream big and unimaginably beyond the comprehension of what others can fathom. It tells us to be inspired by the small victories, that being curious isn’t horrible as long as you don’t become anxious And the most important lesson is that anything and everything is possible even if you stop believing. As long as you continue to work through the process, all things are possible. Consistency even in doubt.
You don’t learn life and then live it! You live life and learn about what it has to teach you on your journey through it. The repetition of life can seem redundant even at a very early age. As children and young adults, we often speak the phrase “I’m bored.” That boredom often turns into some curiosity that leads down a destructive road instead of a creative innovative one. Where I come from boredom originated from being limited and lacking, so we thought. For the most part, Generation X was not as innovative as The Melinniels or Generation Z. There was no real access to computers, the internet, cell phones, or any real technology. But, we had no clue of just how limitless we were. We either made a way out of no way or settled for what we were taught was normal. Most have settled.
Don’t get me wrong, nothing is wrong with normal! But there is something extraordinary in all of us. Whenever going through a dry spell and things become monotonous, it is a call to innovate! Do something new. Will remain stagnant until and unless we decide to CREATE! I don’t know what that creation is. It doesn’t mean quit your day job and become an entrepreneur. It is telling you to walk in your purpose. Turn your passion into a paycheck even. It has to be something that you LOVE to do! It may be volunteer work, a little extra side cash, or an entire career shift. Your belief in your possibilities and your determination to push forward could be the very thing that breaks the generational curses in your family.
Nothing beats a failure better than a try. You’ve been on that same job for 5-10 plus years. making pennies on the dollar. MISERABLE! You go to a happy hour on Wednesday. Hang out with some friends on Friday and Saturdays, Bedside Baptist church on Sundays and you wake up on Monday and live that same humdrum kind of week all over again. How do you survive it without going into a deep depression? And most importantly how do you change your life so that you live it in the way it was intended? I have a few suggestions.
1) Get out of the habit of having to let people see what you’re doing
and how dope you are. Focus on your CREATION! The emancipation
of YOU. Too much of our attention is on being seen and heard when
it should be on hearing… Hearing the voice of God! One word from
God can change your life forever! He will lead you! LET HIM!
2) If you’re not consistent in something you’ll never get to mastery.
Anyone who masters something does not live by their feelings, they
live by their discipline. Be consistent even when you can’t see the
changes you’d like. YOUR EFFORT IS CHANGE! It may not happen
overnight but it is happening for you! Consistency is the new sexy.
3) Be mature about what’s taking place! You won’t always FEEL good
about what you’re doing, even if you love it! Maturity is about being
able to remain consistent with your commitments long after the
emotions have passed.
4) Educate yourself! You can go back to school or NOT! School is not
for everyone. While higher education is awesome, there are some
educated fools! Some folks got more degrees than a thermometer
but can’t throw water out of a boot. Research, ask questions,
watch tutorials, read! Figure out how to become better and get
ahead of the game! You’re not the only person with that kind of
5) Sometimes the secret to progress is not something we need to
learn but something we need to remember. REMEMBER THAT
YOU”RE LIMITLESS! AND EVEN MORE, REMEMBER THAT YOU’RE
DOPE AS FUCK!
Like Alice in Wonderland, we have to believe that there is something on the other side of our normal. Be curious about what that something is. Believe that greater lies on the other side of our normalcy and most importantly, work consistently even after we stop believing. It takes a long time for some and barely any time at all for others. Still, you will survive Life’s dry spell if you decide to try!
